Ghetto ebraico in Venice.  The Venetian Ghetto was the area of Venice in which Jews were compelled to live by the government of the Venetian Republic.
Since the area was limited in space, the houses grew in height and they were tall and narrow, as can be seen in the photo from the doors next to each other
